MAN ARRESTED FOR POSSESION OF UNLICENCED FIREARMS

In a successful intelligence-driven operation, the Mthatha District Task Team arrested a 61-year-old man from Luthubeni locality, Nyandeni A/A in Libode, for unlawful possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

The suspect was taken into custody at approximately 00H05 on Tuesday, March 18, after police searched his homestead and recovered two unlicensed 9mm pistols and ammunition. Further investigation revealed a 7.65 pistol with erased serial number and ammunition, as well as a 9mm Taurus Brown pistol with intact serial number but no ammunition ¹.

Both firearms will undergo ballistic tests to determine if they have been involved in any previous criminal activities.

The suspect is scheduled to appear before the Libode Magistrate Court on Tuesday, March 18, to face charges of unlawful possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

OR Tambo District Commissioner, Major General Norman Modishana, commended the team involved in the operation, stating that their efforts have prevented potential violent crimes. “Removing illegal firearms from our communities ensures the safety of all residents. I applaud the team for their dedication and commitment to crime prevention.”

This arrest is part of ongoing efforts by law enforcement to combat the proliferation of unlicensed firearms in the OR Tambo District. Similar operations have led to the arrest of multiple suspects in recent months
