Orlando Pirates Edge SuperSport in Thrilling Nedbank Cup Quarter-Final
In a nail-biting Nedbank Cup quarter-final match, Orlando Pirates emerged victorious against SuperSport United, winning 5-4 on penalties after the game ended 2-2 at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Saturday afternoon.
Goalkeeper Sipho Chaine was the hero of the day, saving two crucial penalties in the shootout to send the Buccaneers into the semi-finals.
The match was an intense and action-packed affair, with both teams creating scoring opportunities throughout. Pirates drew first blood in the 28th minute when Mbekezeli Mbokazi headed home from a corner. However, Supersport equalized just before halftime, courtesy of a Terrence Dzvukamanja strike.
Evidence Makgopa restored Pirates’ lead in added time, but the Supersport fought back to level the scores once more through Gape Moralo’s 92nd-minute goal.
Despite a lackluster second half, both teams pushed hard for a winner in extra time, but ultimately, the match was decided by penalties. Chaine’s heroics in the shootout proved decisive, as Orlando Pirates advanced to the semi-finals of the Nedbank Cup.
