Tragedy Strikes Mhlanga SSS School: pupils swept away by river
A devastating incident occurred at Mhlanga SSS school in Flagstaff, where 13- and 14-year-old female students were tragically swept away by a river while walking home from school. The students were released early due to the bad weather, but unfortunately, the children were walking in a dangerous area and were caught off guard by the strong river currents.
Dr. Peyana, the District Director of OR Tambo Coastal, had ordered the schools to release the children and go home upon noticing the gathering of clouds. However, the principal of the school expressed worry and concern about the safety of the children, especially during the rainy season.
The head of the department, Ms. Sharon Maasdorp, and MEC Hon. Fundile Gade expressed their heartbreak and emphasized the importance of prioritizing children’s lives, especially during bad weather. The community is in shock and mourning, and condolences have been sent to the families of the victims and the school.
