FORMER DRUG ADDICT TAKES STAND AGAINST SUBSTANCE ABUSE IN SIPAQENI
Sipaqeni, Eastern Cape-In a bold move to combat substance abuse, former drug addict Thembeka Ntshiya, also known as Tudula, is hosting a drug and alcohol awareness campaign in Sipaqeni. The event, scheduled to take place on November 29 at the Sipaqeni Sports Ground, aims to raise awareness about the dangers of substance abuse and provide support to those struggling with addiction.
Thembeka’s personal journey with addiction spans over 16 years, having started using drugs in 2007. However, with the help of organizations like Sisonke and Lifeline, she was able to overcome her addiction in 2023.
“I know firsthand the devastating effects of substance abuse,” Thembeka said. “It affects not only the individual but also their families and communities. That’s why I’m passionate about sharing my story and helping others break free from the grip of addiction.”
Thembeka is working closely with the chieftaincy of Sipaqeni, under the leadership of Chief Diliza Ndabankulu, to make the awareness campaign a success. Her Royal Highness, Nolundi Ndabankulu, has expressed her support for the initiative, stating that it will help curb the “demon” of substance abuse in the community.
“The scourge of substance abuse has ravaged our communities for far too long,” said Her Royal Highness. “We need to take a stand and work together to address this issue. I commend Thembeka for her bravery in sharing her story and for taking the lead in organizing this awareness campaign”.
The awareness campaign is calling on the government to provide support and resources to help skill and rehabilitate individuals struggling with addiction. Thembeka emphasized that with the right support and resources, individuals can overcome their addiction and lead positive, productive lives.
“We need to provide our young people with alternatives to substance abuse,” Thembeka said. “We need to create opportunities for them to engage in positive activities, to learn new skills, and to develop their talents. By doing so, we can help them build a brighter future for themselves and for our community.”
The event organizers are appealing for logistical support, including tents, chairs, catering, and other essentials, to ensure the success of the awareness campaign.
The drug and alcohol awareness campaign is scheduled to take place on November 29 at the Sipaqeni Sports Ground. All members of the community are invited to attend and show their support for this important initiative.
