R59 MILLION FOR SECURITY IN THE EASTERN CAPE SCHOOLS
The Eastern Cape department of education has set aside R59 million in an effort to strengthen security in schools. Education spokesperson in the Eastern Cape, Mali Mtima says they are working hand in hand with the districts in identifying those schools that are more vulnerable. Teacher unions and and education activists believe this will contribute to the improvement of provincial education as students and educators will feel safe, while equipment will be safe.
“We will employ 1000 security officers who will ensure safety in schools. Those will work with police officers and community policing forums in the districts” Mtima said, adding that the department will also install cameras as part of strengthening safety in provincial schools. The department says they are focusing on those schools that are at high risk of crime, specifically Umtata and Gqeberha.
SADTU in the Eastern Cape has welcomed the initiative, citing that it will improve the level of education and dedication from both learners and educators. SADTU spokesperson Malibongwe Ntame says they have been long called for the department to consider strengthening safety and security in schools.
“We have been waiting for this response, as we held a meeting in December, one of the burning issues was safety in schools. Now that the department makes this promise it is like music to our ears because we, educators, are not safe in schools and the equipment is at risk of being stolen” Ntame said.
Education activist, Hendrik Makaneta believes this will improve the education of South Africa as he called on all provinces to embark on ensuring safety in schools.
“It is a great initiative by the government and we applaud it. We are therefore calling on parents to ensure that schools close to them are safe as government alone cannot win this battle” Makaneta said.
The initiative, according to the department is aimed at all schools in the province.
