ANC Members Wounded in Attack During Commemoration Event in KwaCeza

During a government event commemorating the 110th anniversary of King Dinuzulu ka Cetshwayo’s death in KwaCeza, Nongoma, northern KwaZulu-Natal, on Saturday, a disturbing incident unfolded. The African National Congress (ANC) has reported that some of its members were injured and hospitalized following an attack.

According to the ANC’s statement, the alleged assailants are members of the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), who were reportedly transported from a hostel by bus. Both the ANC and IFP are actively working to quell any further outbreaks of violence stemming from the incident.

The tension exacerbates existing political strains in the region, as exemplified by the strained relationship between ANC KwaZulu-Natal chairperson, Siboniso Duma, and AmaZulu Traditional Prime Minister Thulasizwe Buthelezi. Buthelezi had accused the ANC of disrespecting the King, which led to swift intervention from Duma, who accused Buthelezi of hijacking the government event.

Amidst preparations for the upcoming general elections in May, political leaders are calling for heightened political tolerance. IFP leader Velenkosini Hlabisa emphasized the importance of maturity among program directors at government functions, urging against creating unnecessary disruptions or threats of violence. The primary goal is to ensure a peaceful election where citizens can freely exercise their choices and usher in a new government.
